GREEN×EXPO 2027 横浜・国際園芸博覧会 出展ガーデン「花鏡」作庭日記②【日本工学院の学生のみなさんと竹加工レクチャー】

8月23日、日曜日。ホワイトボードには「花博共同出展『花鏡』活動」と書かれ、集合ミーティングから一日が始まりました。場所は日本工学院八王子専門学校。GREEN×EXPO 2027に出展する庭で使う竹を「竹加工レクチャー」をしながら、造園・土木科の学生のみなさんと一緒に加工していきます。
Sunday, August 23rd. The whiteboard read "Hanakagami — GREEN×EXPO Joint Exhibition Activity," and the day began with a group meeting. The venue was Nihon Kogakuin Hachioji College of Technology. Together with students from the landscape and civil engineering department, we set to work on the bamboo for our GREEN×EXPO 2027 garden.
学生のみなさんに実際に竹を持ってもらうと、想像より重い、あるいは思ったより軽い、という反応が返ってきます。実際に触ってみて、はじめてわかることがあるはずです。
When the students actually picked up a culm, the reactions came back straight away — heavier than they imagined, or lighter than they expected. There are things you only understand once the material is in your hands.
竹を割る
Splitting the bamboo
竹割り器を竹の木口に当て、木槌で打ち込みます。刃が入ったら竹を真っ直ぐに立て、トントンと地面に打ちつける。すると竹割り器の重さで素直に竹が割れていきます。
You set the splitter against the cut end of the culm and drive it in with a wooden mallet. Once the blades have bitten, you stand the culm upright and tap the end against the ground. The weight of the splitter alone then carries the split cleanly down the length of the bamboo.
力任せに打てば割れる、というものではありません。まっすぐ割るコツは、力ではなく、竹の向きと刃の当て方を整えること。学生のみなさんが交代で体験しながら、少しずつ「竹の素性」を聞きながら感覚をつかんでいったように思います。
It isn't a matter of hitting it hard enough. The knack of a straight split lies not in force but in aligning the culm and seating the blades properly. As the students took turns, I think they gradually found the feel of it — of listening to what each culm was made of.
屋外へ、そして節を抜く
Outside, and clearing the nodes
屋外に出て作業を続けました。EXPO 2027の横断幕の前で、割竹が地面に何本も並んでいきます。割った竹は、内側の節を落とし、両サイドを真っ直ぐに加工して、竹を組んだときに収まりが良いように整えていきます。竹割鉈で、一節ずつ丁寧に。
We moved outdoors and carried on. In front of the EXPO 2027 banner, split culms lined up one after another across the ground. Each piece then has the nodes on its inner face pared away and both edges trued, so that everything sits neatly once the bamboo is assembled. With a bamboo-splitting nata, node by node.
割り終えた竹を立てて確認します。真横から見て、通っているかどうか。この地味な確認作業が、最後に組んだ時の美しさに直結します。
We stand the finished pieces upright to check them — sighting from the side to see whether the line runs true. This unglamorous bit of checking is exactly what becomes the beauty of the finished work.
一日の終わりに
At the end of the day
作業のあいだに落ちた笹や切りくずを片付けて、この日は解散となりました。庭づくりの現場では、片付けまでが仕事です。むしろ、片付いた場所からしか次の作業は始まりません。
We cleared away the fallen leaves and offcuts, and the day came to a close. On a garden site, tidying up is part of the work. If anything, the next stage can only begin from a space that has been put back in order.
竹を割る技術そのものは、一日では身につきません。それでも、木槌の重さや、刃が節を越えるときの手ごたえは、体に残ったのではないかと思います。花鏡の庭は、こうしてたくさんの人の手を経て、少しずつかたちになっていきます。
Nobody masters the craft of splitting bamboo in a single day. Even so, I suspect the weight of the mallet and the feel of the blade crossing a node have stayed with them. The Hanakagami garden is taking shape slowly, passing through many pairs of hands along the way.
